#210 – Is this Gold’s Gym Innovator the Architect of the Health and Fitness Craze in America?

This week on The Alden Report, we are joined by successful architect, author and health and fitness legend Ed Connors. Ed's life and career have been fascinating to say the least. Originally born in Omaha, Nebraska, Ed graduated from Creighton Preparatory School, as well as the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree. He was drafted into the Army and served in the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters.

After returning from the war, Ed began his architecture career and worked for several prominent firms, including Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates and the office of Charles Eames. During this time, he was involved in the design of major projects such as California Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, the Headquarters for the Port of L.A. in San Pedro, and Fox Plaza in Century City.

In 1979, Ed and two partners purchased the single Gold's Gym in Santa Monica, California. They developed specific plans and programs that allowed the company to grow from a single gym operation to a multi-faceted company engaged in product distribution and licensing. Ed opened up the first gym franchise ever with a Gold's Gym in San Francisco, and the chain grew to 704 locations in 26 countries and 46 states before he exited the company in 2004.

During his time building the Gold's Gym brand, Ed helped shape the careers of hundreds of individuals, including Ms. Olympia Cory Everson and Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler. He also got several dozen athletes into professional wrestling and helped launch the careers of several TV personalities.

Today, Ed is working on his memoir entitled THE THREE MUSCLETEERS and actively pursuing the creation of a new gym model suited for the post-pandemic world.

While in law school at UC Davis, Mr. Freund clerked for the Consumer Protection Unit of the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, where he worked on civil and criminal cases involving fraud, deceptive advertising, anticompetitive practices, and other economic crimes.  Mr. Freund also served as an editor of the UC Davis Law Review.

Mr. Freund has lectured about social media advertising law at the University of Southern California, the University of San Diego, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and the IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems, and he has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Bloomberg Law, Vox, Business Insider, and Forbes on those issues.

David has a most impressive resume with almost four decades of success at several public Fortune 500, private, private equity-owned, and family businesses and a record of seven straight company turnarounds.  In 2015, he retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of Spectrum Brands Holdings, Inc. which is a global and diversified consumer products company and he also served as Director from April 2010 to September 30, 2015; as President and Chief Executive Officer from June 2010 to April 1, 2015; as President, Global Batteries & Personal Care and Home & Garden from January 2007 to November 2013; as Co-Chief Operating Officer from January 2007 to April 2010. 

David’s background includes more than 25 years of experience in the consumer products industry, including executive leadership roles at Newell Rubbermaid, EAS, Brunswick Bicycles, Outboard Marine Corporation, Wilson Sporting Goods Co. and other companies. He also served as a director and member of the compensation committee of Husqvarna AB, a Swedish manufacturer of outdoor power products. He has served on the boards of numerous businesses including Husqvarna AB, Valspar, Spectrum Brands, EAS, Outboard Marine Corporation and Naked Juice.

This week on The Alden Repot, I am joined by artist David Drebin. A graduate of Parsons School of Design in NYC, David is a multidisciplinary artist working in various art forms producing limited edition works including Photographs, Lightboxes, Neon Light Installations, Diamond Dust works and more. His work combines voyeuristic and psychological viewpoints in a unique manner, offering the viewer a dramatic insight into emotions and experiences which many of us have doubtlessly felt at some point in our lives.

Following his first solo exhibition at Camera Work in Berlin in 2005 and the release of his first comprehensive illustrated book Love and Other Stories in 2007, Drebin experienced a stream of worldwide representation by some of the finest galleries globally.

Drebin's artworks also known as “Drebins” are unique and instantly recognizable as his own. His artistic style is often described as epic, dramatic and, above all, cinematic. This week I’m very happy to welcome sales coach, business executive, author and public speaker, Glenn Poulos to The Alden Report. #195 – Can We Enable the World Differently for Those Who Are Differently Abled?

This week I am honored to host one of the most inspirational guests I have ever had the pleasure to have on The Alden Report. My guest, Emmanuel Kelly was found as an infant half dead in a box on a battlefield on the border of Iraq. With no birth certificate, passport and no known identify he was taken to an orphanage where he lived out his early life. At a very early age, he experienced the worst of mankind often witnessing horrific events such as executions and bombings. Miraculously, at the age of 7, he was brought to Australia by humanitarian Moira Kelly for life-changing surgery. Over the next 14 years, Emmanuel had 6 surgeries all the while learning how to walk and feed himself using a knife and fork.

After overcoming enormous obstacles, and at just 18 years of age, Emmanuel became an Australian X-Factor sensation by showcasing his angelic voice, accumulating over 500M views online. Since then, he has become a media sensation and has captured, inspired and entertained close to 1 billion people worldwide as he has toured with Coldplay, opened for Snoop Dog, performed with David Foster and legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold, performed at the United Nations Assembly multiple times and released a song called “Never Alone” which was produced by Paul Oakenfold and Chris Martin of Coldplay.

I’m not going to lie, things have been pretty rough around here both on a personal and professional level. So today, I thought I’d open up more than I believe I ever have here on The Alden Report. Today I’m talking straight to the mic again about some personal pain that I am experiencing. Some people say that experiencing pain is one of the universal laws of success. That is, most successful people experience pain and pain brings wisdom. If you can make it through and come out of the other side, success will be waiting. Well, I’ve experienced my share of pain and I’ve seen how it has led to success. But in down times like these, I often have to question why it is we must go through these negative experiences at all?  I elaborate on these experiences on my latest blog which you can read here. As I say in the blog, I’m not opening up this way so that you can pity me. I understand that being an entrepreneur can bring extremely difficult times. I’ve built a number of businesses over the last two decades, most of which actually failed.

But we are strong. I am strong. Successful entrepreneurs are strong and enduring. I know it will be fine in the end. I know I am on the right path. I know pain is a necessary part of the human experience. But right now, I welcome the other side more than ever.
